We have had a number of instances over the years where customers want us to fix their old computers and laptops.

I get that they are familiar with the operating system and how everything works, but all electronics will come to an end at some point.

Unfortunately, trying to keep old computers and laptops running past their end of life expectancy is unrealistic and often ends up in the customer dumping money into a device that is going to fail and end up being replaced anyway.

Also the older computers and laptops can no longer perform correctly in today’s environment.

First of all look at the specs of your computer or laptop. To function at reasonable speeds you should have the following

  • i5 processor
  • 8GB Ram
  • at least 10% free space on your hard drive.

Anything less than this will result in poor performance.

Next look at the age

laptops need to be replaced every 3-5 years

Computers need to be replaced every 5-7 years

Servers need to be replaced every 5-7 years

If you have an aging computer or laptop that is acting up you may want to consider simply replacing it, rather than spending money on it, if the device is out of any of the above specs or if it is too old.

Computers have dropped in prices recently and you can now pick up a good refurb pc or laptop with a 3 year warranty, with a solid state hard drive for as low as $349.

Also, if you are still running Windows 7 you need to remember that support will be discontinued in January 2020.
